Aliexpress Wig Review

Not sponsored.

This post is a little different from my regular posts but I wanted to get back into the groove of "reviewing" again. I'm not an expert on hair but it's still something I feel is an important and fun aspect of my journey in embracing my self and growing up. So, as the title reads, this is a wig review. I've basically been around wigs all my life (thank you, Mommy) but have only started wearing them when I came to college. In total I have had five wigs, all synthetic lace fronts; this time around for my 6th purchase I decided to finally go and get a human hair lace front.

My experience with synthetic hair has been great but I recently realized how expensive that option is in the long run. I buy my synthetic hair for about $40-50 X 5 = $200-250 spent. The problem with synthetic is it seems "cheap" each time you buy it but its the fact that you have to keep buying it that's the problem. I take good care of my hair but the longest synthetic has lasted me is probably 4-5 months, max. After about the 2nd month, it loses its vibrancy and the appearance onwards is either flat or an unflattering volume. I realized that the $200+ I've spent in multiple wigs could have been invested in buying a human hair wig once that lasts 6 months - 1 year.

I currently live in Houston for school and the only beauty supply I have access to doesn't really carry human hair wigs so my only option was to buy hair online. I have friends and my sister who have ordered hair from Aliexpress so I chose to make my first ever purchase there. I spent a few days doing "research" and looking at reviews, vendors, Youtube videos and blogs. I finally decided on a

Shipping/Customer Service

Placed my order on Thursday November 2. Payment process took 1 day. Shipping took 6 days. Received package on Wednesday, November 9. I kept in communication with supplier throughout the whole process, even prior to purchase. I contacted them (Nancy) through Aliexpress message center and Whatsapp. Extremely friendly service and I really did feel like I was speaking with a real person who had a genuine interest in their service/product. After I received the wig, Nancy sent me a message with care-taking tips that do come in handy!

Box Opening

Received the wig in a UPS bag. Sender is from China. Details of packaging right off the bat: hair was wrapped in net in thick plastic bag. No wig cap included. I won't get into these details because they're pretty on par with majority feedback you'll read about this hair. What's important is the actual hair. So, was there any odor? Yes. I don't know if this is common "weave scent" but it had a fishy undertone. I did immediately wash the hair out once I got it and the smell went away. The hair takes shampoo + conditioner very well just like natural hair; conditioner does wonders to this hair. Texture went from stiff, packaged curls to natural, weightless curls but still keeping its vibrancy.

Styling

All it takes is a few finger combings through the hair to release the hair and give the wig a fuller, more natural look. I actually washed my hair first time thing when I got it (with conditioner and warm water) and that livened the hair quite a bit. This hair also sheds quite a lot. Hair doesn't necessarily fall out but gliding your hands through the hair will pull up a wad of strands, especially when wet. Is it a major problem? Could be in the future. I really like the volume of this hair and would hate to see it all lost due to shedding. However, shedding is very common in curly hair so I was expecting it.

I  made the mistake of blow drying the hair which dramatically dries it out (can be brought back to life by washing). I made another mistake and cut the lace front awkwardly but I'm able to hide it by blending it with my baby hairs. I am definitely not a fan of French lace and now I know that next time I will be ordering a silk base closure. The hair pieces are all unison so there is no pre-styling done to the lengths. I will eventually go back in and trim the front so there's a diagonal layering from shoulder to back. It might help to trim the ends because that's where the shedding builds up.

You can switch up the volume of the hair quite easily. Some days I like really big hair so I'll finger through the hair until the curls loosen up and it will stay as so for the day. If I want to go back to that "wet" tight curl, I mix water and some conditioner and soak the hair, air dry and that will stay as styled as well.

Other than that, I don't use much product in this hair. I keep it moisturized with coconut oil, water spritz or co-wash/shampoo. A lot of people had complained that the hair mattes up in the back/neck area - this is very true. Especially under this very, very hot Texas heat. I solved that problem by making small long braids of the hair that tend to matte and so far, it's helped a lot.

Final Thoughts

Very natural looking hair. I am optimistic about the quality over the next few weeks-months. Needs lots of maintenance; it looks its best when moisturized/wet. Customer service is beyond amazing. Hair will be good/bad depending on how well you take care of it.

Comment (or reach me on social media) if you would like to see an updated review a few weeks from now on the progressing state of the hair!
